The Institute

The Institute.

‘The Institute’ opens the doors of a commonly closed world: the Higher Institute for Fine Arts (HISK) in Ghent. The 230 artists having resided there in the past 20 years present exclusive artist’s pages and acclaimed experts reflect on art and art institutes.

The HISK offers young and talented artists from home and abroad their own studio and personal guidance by professionals from the international art scene for a period of two years. In these two years they are given time and freedom to develop. This is often the start of a successful international career.

‘The Institute’ unites all HISK artists from all over the world. They show old, but mainly new work thus offering a surprising view on the recent history of modern art in Belgium and abroad. Moreover influential art critics such as HISK co-founder and chairman Willem Elias, Pascal Gielen, Katerina Gregos, Gertrud Sandqvist, John C. Welchman, artist Nedko Solakov and philosopher Tom De Mette shed their light on the artist in his studio and his social role in the world. Artistic director Oscar van den Boogaard debates with Tate Modern director Chris Dercon on the future of art in its academic context. They asks themselves: ‘What is the role of a Higher Institute for Fine Arts?’ and ‘How does such an institute remain relevant?’ The result is an impressive ‘gesamt’ artwork, marking the ambition and future of the HISK.

'The Institute' was voted one of the 50 'Best Curated Books Student Selection 2015', selected out of 410 books. Link: http://www.bestverzorgdeboeken-studentenselectie.nl/2015/the-institute/
