Martin Germann

Martin Germann works as independent curator and lives in Brussels and Cologne. Upcoming projects include the group show “Another Energy” (co-curated with Mami Kataoka) at Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, as well as solo exhibitions with Oliver Laric at OCAT Shanghai, Thomas Ruff at the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts, and Raoul De Keyser at MWOODS in Beijing.

From 2012-2019 he was leading the artistic department of S.M.A.K. as senior curator, where he could establish “From the Collection”, a permanent and flexible format for collection presentations, including a dynamic, one-year long project around a wall piece by Sol LeWitt, Furthermore he organized solo exhibitions with a.o. Raoul De Keyser, Zhang Peili, Hiwa K, Gerhard Richter, Michael E. Smith, James Welling, Nairy Baghramian, Lee Kit, Kasper Bosmans, Michael Buthe, Richard Venlet, Jordan Wolfson and Rachel Harrison, often as international collaborations, and worked on major collection acquisitions such as “Verlust der Mitte: Curated by Christoph Büchel”. He also organized thematic presentations such as the two-chapter survey “The Photographic”, with Tanja Boon and Steven Humblet, or “Drawing. The Bottom Line”, with Philippe van Cauteren. For ‘Lili Dujourie: Folds in time’ (2015, co-organized with Muzee Oostende) he received an AICA award for Belgium’s best exhibition.

In earlier stages he was Curator at Kestner Gesellschaft Hanover (2008-2012), Buero Friedrich (2006-2007), and the 4th Berlin Biennial for Contemporary Art (2005-2006), where he directed the program of the project space “Gagosian Gallery, Berlin’. He has published numerous exhibition catalogues and monographies and his writing has appeared in international magazines such as 032c, Frieze, or Mousse. He is a regular visiting lecturer at HISK Ghent, and a board member of Etablissement d’en Face in Brussels.
