Anike Joyce Sadiq

Anike Joyce Sadiq lives and works in Berlin.

Her performative-poetic yet minimalistic conceptual practice interweaves questions concerning the individual and the public with historical, social and spatial site specifics. By the usage of her own body and experience, she not only addresses the „personal as political” but meditates on the logic of representation and on the right to opacity. Her focus lies less on recreating discursive approaches, but rather in setting the frame for experiential relations.

Her work had been presented in several national and international institutions such as the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, Wanås Konst in Sweden, NGO - Nothing Gets Organised in Johannesburg, Vox Populi in Philadelphia and at the Dak’art Biennale.

In 2016, she realized the permanent installation Straßenlaternen - wir waren draußen drinnen, questioning the museum as an accessible space for everyone, dedicated to her childhood friends.

In 2019, she was invited by ContemporaryAnd (C&) to Houston where she presented the work Visited by a Tiger. The project is based on conversations with psychologist Dr. Lula Morton Drewes on forms of embodied knowledge and a re-engagement with image-making in and as politics.

She has received a number of awards, such as the Villa Romana Prize, and was a fellow of the Kunststiftung BW, the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris and the Akademie Schloss Solitude. In spring 2019, she was a guest teacher at the Master/IMG class Body, Theory and Poetics of the Performative at the State Academy of Fine Arts Stuttgart.

In Mai 2022, she had her first monographic exhibition Mit Glück hat es nichts zu tun at the Künstlerhaus Stuttgart addressing self-organizing in and structural shortcomings as well as violences of art institutions. In fall 2022 she received the cooperation fellowship of the Akademie der Künste Berlin with dancer Laurie Young and artist leo for their project Trembling „(...) as an instinct or institution of the world that refuses imperial assessments of reality.” (Glissant)
