Swedish artist Hilma af Klint’s occult paintings were discovered in 1985. Recently, they have been shown all over the world, latest at Guggenheim in New York. They fascinate with their visual language, at the same time obscure and very contemporary. She has been called an abstract pioneer, not entirely correct. Her attitude is much more a researcher’s, or a finder’s. 1896 she said Yes to a question from one of her spiritual advisers if she wanted to do the paintings for a new time. That affirmation brought us one of the most extraordinary artistic œvres in modern times.

Gertrud Sandqvist is professor in the theory and history of ideas of visual art at Malmö Art Academy, Lund University, Sweden. From 1995 to 2007 and from 2011 to the present, Sandqvist has been Rector at Malmö Art Academy, Lund University.
