Hamza Halloubi, Reading Session: Michael Baers – “Investigatory Poetics”

Through demonstrations, lectures and reading sessions in which artists introduce their own works and key texts, an unfolding reflection will take shape on how art, intellectual life, and public culture intersect.

Organised by Jeremiah Day, the second in the series of four public sessions invites artists to exemplify and elaborate on research in and through the arts.

In the first section Hamza Halloubi will share a montage of image and text that inform his practice, part demonstration and part self-exposition, ranging from poetry to documentary.

In the second section Michael Baers will offer a short text to be read together, considered and discussed by the group, consisting of Ed Sander’s "Investigative Poetry," a key text of the 1960s American counter-cultural scene, cross-referenced by another seminal text, Frederic Jameson's "Cognitive Mapping." Together these offer a start towards a framework of imagining inquiry and investigation, braced by levity, brevity, and irreverence. Baers's suggests this approach as a counter-model to the deep seriousness of purpose that burdens much of today's artistic-research. To conclude, Baers will present a work-in-progress, grounding the discussion.

Please join us for this special dialogue between two distinct practices, in which the public gathers to witness, contemplate and in shared engagement and discussion as well.
