Hamza Halloubi develops narratives that unfold in a sphere that balances between documentary and fiction. He approaches history in a poetic manner involving recurrent themes such as reading, memory and exile. These narratives, situated somewhere between the personal and the collective, run parallel to the official version of history but question it at the same time. Halloubi’s works have an exceptional evocative power. He reduces the image to its most elementary form: an image that captures and transforms reality. According to Halloubi, reality always is a construction. In his films he uses spoken language to create yet another image.

Born in 1982 in Tangier, Morocco, Halloubi currently lives and works in Brussels (BE), Tangier (MA), and Amsterdam (NL). Halloubi holds a Master’s degree in Fine Arts from the ENSAV la Cambre, in Brussels. From 2012 – 2014 he participated in the residency program of HISK, Higher Institute for Fine Arts in Ghent (BE), and from 2015 – 2017 he was resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam (NL).
