Jan Van Woensel Van Woensel

Jan Van Woensel is an independent curator, art agent, art advisor, critic, lecturer and musician. He is the founder and editor-in-chief of New York Magazine of Contemporary Art and Theory. He served as a faculty member in the Curatorial Practice and Fine Arts Departments of California College of the Arts (CCA) in San Francisco. In 2008 he was the International Curator in Residence at Otis College of Art and Design in Los Angeles. From 2007 to 2009 he was a faculty member at NYU’s department of Art and Art Professions. In 2007, he was awarded the prestigious NYC Bloomberg Curatorial Fellowship at Art in General and Bloomberg LP.

Currently he is working on two exhibitions with Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), the sixth, seventh and eight installments of his traveling group exhibition Bad Moon Rising (San Francisco, New York, St. Louis, Brussels, Oslo, London, Athens, Providence), and a number of projects that will take place in New York and Los Angeles, USA. In September 2009 he opened The Last Session at the Flemish Art Center in Amsterdam; an apocalyptic project including a large-scale group exhibition, a curated movie theater, live performances by local and international punk, no wave, and metal bands, a publication, and an online radio station.

Van Woensel is appointed as curator at Monty Art Space, a cross-disciplinary not-for-profit organization located in the epicenter of Antwerp’s vibrant contemporary art and fashion district, where he curates exhibitions of video artworks from emerging and established NY based artists.
