Director Sara Weyns and curator of art collection in the city Samuel Saelemakers gave refreshing talks about art in public space.
Weyns discussed the museum’s history and particular context, its relation to nature, the public, and other institutions, its collection, acquisition, conservation, temporary shows, the different collaborations with artists and more.
Focusing on monuments, Saelemakers addressed today’s questions on history, memory, revisionism, representation, possible new ways of presentation as well as the city’s collection. He also presented the recently launched “Public Figures” project, which commissions artists to rethink monuments and started by HISK laureate (2015) Tramaine De Senna’s “Figure of Color”. Her work is on view at the Stadspark until April 18 2021.
In addition, Christiaan Huyghe from Etoile Mecanique talked about maintenance and restoration of works with very particular needs, such as Erwin Wurm’s “Misconceivable” (2010).
