Beats Soup will take place in the framework of PRIMA – 250 jaar Academie Mechelen.

What is the difference between a DJane and a chef? Is it possible to mingle the sensory input of beats and tastes? Does body movement have to be distinguished into one (dancing) or the other (snipping)? The Beats Soup event invites the audience to join in the mingling of senses.

The setting is made of a long table with a DJane on one side. The rest is occupied by vegetables, fruit and other various eatable ingredients as well as cooking utensils.

Around the table are people who cook/boil/move/cut/eat/smell/touch/bounce/taste/feed/snip/dance.

Around them, are speakers which surround their bodies in music and maybe influence the way the smells of the prepared dishes wander around the room, too. The rather chaotic scenery is a tool to suspend the usual behavior for some time before people start taking in positions again. Some start cooking for everyone else, some start tasting the absurdest combinations, some start telling the stories and memories they got to share from their past. Beats Soup is a participatory event to pose the questions mentioned above, to experience a communal moment through several senses and to be surprised by the dynamics of strangers who dance and eat together.
