January 22, we spent the day at the S.M.A.K., which is located just a few minutes away from the HISK. Artistic director Philippe Van Cauteren received us with coffee and talked about the Museum of Actual Art’s history and possible future, its collection and acquisitions, the relationship with artists, various projects, etc. The new group of HISK candidate laureates were invited to enter the backstages of the museum - storage, archive, “emergency room”, restoration room, etc - as happened last year. After lunch, curator Ann Hoste gave us a tour to Nashashibi/Skaer’s “Future Sun” exhibition, talking not only about the works on view but also the process of making the exhibition- her’s and the duo’s. We finished the day by the “From the Collection - noWHere” exhibition curated by collection’s researcher Thibaut Verhoeven. Departing from the idea of non-place, Verhoeven talked about the selected works and how he addresses the collection.
