Kaleidoskop – Fragmente. Im Kino. is an invitation to discover 32 films in five curated short film programmes with free admission on the cinema screen at LE STUDIO and marks the end of the Fragmente edition. Kaleidoskop – Fragmente. Im Kino. deals with coming together and exchange, the longing for touch, with the sensory aspects of film, cinema and collective experiences. Due to past lockdowns, Kaleidoskop – Fragmente. Im Kino. could not take place as planned, but now CineCollective is happy to present cinema as a sensory, transmedial and discursive space on two evenings, as well as to fill the screen and stage of LE STUDIO with screenings, talks and performances.

On 4 and 5 October 2021, CineCollective will show a kaleidoscopic range of current cinematic works in five screenings, whose titles ON HOLD [PAUSE], IN TOUCH [PLAY], OVERLOAD [EJECT], INSIGHT [FAST FORWARD] and RECALL [REWIND] are indicative of the themes of distance, closeness and contact, standstill and overload, retrospection and outlook, which have become increasingly relevant as a result of the pandemic. In cooperation with the Austrian Film Museum, seven analogue short films will be put into dialogue with contemporary cinematic positions. Kaleidoskop – Fragmente. Im Kino. confronts image, ways of seeing and politics of the gaze and addresses absences, failed translation processes and asks about the visibility and invisibility of cinema and about physical, virtual and utopian spaces of possibility in the inside, outside and in-between. The 2-day film programme will be framed by performances and film talks with present filmmakers.

Stephanie Rizaj's film As If Biting Iron (7'00, 2019) will be screened on the 5th of October 2021, as part of the programme INSIGHT (FAST FORWARD) (79min)

About As If Biting Iron:

Questioning perceptions of labour and futility through the absence of the body, a set of constructed body straps, bearing the phrase “Struggle itself is enough to fill a heart”, laid the foundations for Rizaj’s performative sculptures. On returning to her familial Kosovo, Rizaj turned such Sisyphean concerns on their head as she refused to carry the weight of the felt patriarchy and instead followed her impulse to ask: “What if women could move a house?”

In “As if Biting Iron” (2019), Rizaj uses the medium of film to challenge this very question as we witness the walls of a brutalist building, situated in the forests of Kosovo, being moved by the forces of over 100 anonymous women. Pushing against the deadweight of the concrete, the burden of oppression literally and figuratively comes undone. Rizaj’s will to collective refusal not only affirms the potency of female unification, but implements a confidence that is palpable.

All films will be shown in original version with English subtitles.
