When Beyoncé's music video for the song 'Hold Up' (2016) appears on screen, it shows quite some similarities to the video 'Ever is Over All' (1997), by artist Pipilotti Rist. In 'Ever is Over All' a young woman in a bright blue dress is smashing car windows with a large flower. A female officer passes by and nods gallantly at the woman in blue. Beyoncé exchanges the flower for a baseball bat and executes the gesture in a tale about betrayal.
In 'Blue Skies Forever' we adopt the two figures from Pipilotti Rist's video. Dorothy, as from the Wizard of Oz & Officer, a representative of the law. Moving between fantasy and cliché, we show different images of these female archetypes, referencing pop culture, media and film.
Blue Skies Forever is the first performance of buren that is being developed in the black-box.
It will premiere in 2018. At X-tract we show work-in-progress, on the same night you can see waterwaswasser by Dounia Mouhammed and Chernobyl Drawings by Ruud Anthoni, Nicolas Delalieux, Nikolas Lestaeghe & Karlien Torfs
