Egon Van Herreweghe
The work of Egon Van Herreweghe is a delicate negotiation between the figurative and the abstract, and between the calculated idea and its metamorphosis into a work of art. He investigates the inner secrets of his media - photographs, clippings and found objects - by repeatedly reproducing them. While his work is diverse and often on a large scale, it gives an impression of sensitivity. The materials have a fragility but above all create images that do not deal in certainties. They often show little more than the residue of a conjuring act or the acceptance of inevitable failure that lies at the heart of an indifferent world. These are images with a depth and darkness that refers to what cannot be locked down or depicted: the eternal vulnerability of ideas.
The lack of a formal framework in terms of medium or technique emphasises the intimacy of Van Herreweghe's work. It is characterised by an extreme reticence and does not seek to belong, relate or be judged. The elements are constantly in flux, possessed by something intangible. The support varies, the work grows and evolves into something else or dissolves in the crucible of what has yet to be found. The context and architecture of an exhibition space form an endlessly renewed challenge. Each presentation articulates new - at times unintentional - presences and accentuates the temporality of the work: like the characters of an alphabet that is deliberately left uncompleted.
