We are pleased to present recent works of Niklaus Rüegg and to launch his new book, Hobby und Wahrheit (Hobby and Truth; edition fink, Zurich).
For some time now this Zurich artist has focused on the medium of the cartoon, in particular the oeuvre of cartoonist Carl Barks (1901 – 2000), the creator of Disney's Duckburg and author of over 3,000 pages of cartoon strips. Niklaus Rüegg models his works on reproductions of the now classical tales, transforming them back into originals while also overpainting or cutting out the speech bubbles and the narrative content in the process. What remains after the narrative and speech have been de-constructed are shapes, accessories, backdrops devoid of meaning. On the other hand he dissects and re-assembles the accessories, creating unknown worlds. The de-construction of narrative is followed by a re-construction, albeit one whose trajectory is a mystery.
