SMAK, Ghent, Belgium
On Friday 25/01, the HISK Candidate Laureates were on an exciting visit behind the scenes of the SMAK.
Artistic director Philippe Van Cauteren opened the doors to the museum's collection, showing the artists restricted
areas, such as the storage and archival facilities, the restoration and the “emergency boxes” rooms (the latter with key
items related to works from the collection).
While Philippe Van Cauteren talked about the creation of SMAK and its collection, he showed some precious items like
“Pense-Bête” by Marcel Broodthaers and the portrait of Jan Hoet made by Marlene Dumas and donated to the SMAK after
Jan Hoet’s passing.
