On Thursday 20 June 2019, the HISK Candidate Laureates had a full programme in Brussels.
At first, they visited WIELS where they were received by director Dirk Snauwaert, who gave an amazing talk about the art centre’s origins, its artistic directive as well as a long analysis of what it means to be an art institution today and in the capital of Europe. After that, WIELS curator Caroline Dumalin made an introduction about the current exhibition of Mario García Torres. This was followed by a presentation on WIELS’ art residency programme, given by coordinator Eva Gorsse.
On the second part of the study trip, the HISK Candidate Laureates visited the rooftop lab-garden of artist AnneMarie Maes, who explained her working methods and main research topics, which explore the relation between art and science. Her lab was a green haven in the heart of Brussels.
The last stop was at BOZAR, where the artists attended the interview and screening 'Gravity & Grace’ by Chris Kraus. A very interesting day!
