Dimensions and transformations are two central concepts in the works of Elise Berkvens. She wants to arouse a feeling of amazement with her painting, in which she plays with the feeling of spatial experience on the flat area. She wants to play with dimensions, create openings and to let doubts arise. Thus she tries to create an extra –mental- dimension, in which structures are opened and in which it becomes possible to step outside of the borders of what we are used to perceive. New perceptions will arise. Her paintings are the result of a preceding research in a mental experience of space. Elise Berkvens is especially inspired by life itself and her amazement for it. She reflects on the way that elements appear from the external, material world and how this affects her inner experience. She’s captivated by the dialectics of what is observed and how we experience the inner self.
