The whole life in societies, where modern conditions of production prevail, presents itself as an immense accumulation of spectacles. Spectacle and reality at the same time produce a multitude of informations, notions, experiences and emotions. The inability of absorption of all this excess causes a fatigue for the human spirit. Sauna visits are essential to me and the peace and time for reflection this experience brings me served as inspiration for my latest series of works.
De Roover's early work focuses on the meaning of identities and the performative aspect of its creation. In previous projects she has researched grass roots politics and the relation between presidential campaigning and Greek Theatre (You can’t spell America w/o me, 2013), how identities exist on the internet in relation tot pop culture (The Selfie Song, 2013), Mormon Lifestyle and musical (A Mitt Summer Night’s Dream, 2014) and the cult of health (Is bio the new avant garde, 2015) and religion (Cosmic Latte, 2016). Studying and integrating the self-empowerment program Avatar and more specific the discarding of identity, she is now researching the honest involvement of an artist with the public and tries to question the separation created by archetypes frequently adapted within the conformity of the art world.
"My latest work deals with service as art or the utility of art. My passion for wellness, business and ‘cooking as a gift’ has translated into the non-profit organization Soft Focus Institute which functions as a free-floating platform concerned with our artistic wellbeing. Let’s say it functions as an art rehab where all actions are defined as art and the reintegration of the exhausted artist, the broke collector, the let-down gallerist can take place in the most human way." - Marijke De Roover
