Laure Cottin Stefanelli
What are we to make of the bodies we see around us today, the way we work on them, and the way they work on us? What can the camera tell us not only about these particular practices, but also about the fundamental gesture that lies at the heart of so many contemporary phenomena - that of separating out something we then choose to call a "body", so as to constitute it as the subject of pleasure, the object of discipline, the source of problems, of wisdom, or of spontaneity - in any case, as the frontier that inevitably stands between ourselves and those around us?
If, in the words of the American physical therapist John T Barnes, "the body is just the hard part of the mind", then what is it that such a body is called forth to resist?
In these recent videos, installations and photographs, Laure Cottin Stefanelli and Peter Snowdon explore not only a range of physical practices - bodybuilding, contemporary dance, osteopathy, and improvised theatre - but also their own image-making practice as itself a somatic process. This exhibition includes finished films alongside fragments and traces of work still in progress.
