In this exhibition five artists are highlighted. The art technical label grisaille remembers mainly to painting in shades of gray. In the Middle Ages grisailles were painted on the outside of the wings of triptychs to suggest sculptures. Also later in noble residences we see grisailles, whether or not aiming for atrompe-l'oeil, appear in the majestic staircase. The association with mourning and death is not required (see the dance of death by Holbein), but in any case, the grisaille serve as an Apollonian rather than Dionysian ideal.
