Emmanuel Van der Auwera’s works offer cautionary tales for new aesthetic positions.
When we refer to the image, or a domain of images, we’re not talking about what we previously were. The vocabulary of the image is expanding and includes contemporary structures that weren’t always present. The notion of contemporary becomes a crucial one in exploring context, which affects narrative. Today it becomes a question of what is real and what seems real is often carefully crafted, manipulative simulation. Van der Auwera explores this by researching the visualization of trauma and the impossibility of quantifying emotion. Works to be shown include those developed for the Biennale of the Possible Image as well as his most recent works.
