'Con Artist' Videowork 2007
During my residency at the rendez-vous hotel Noailles, situated in the Matonge area, the African neighbourhood of Brussels, I decided to invite a "Marabout": an African witch-doctor. I called him up explaining that I had many love problems, which were in fact completely fictitious. He told me he could fix my problems and we arranged a rendez-vous in the hotel Noailles. I secretly videotaped our meeting, hiding the camera in the walls, as they will never give their permission to be filmed. The whole rendez-vous took about 20 minutes and was completely unspectacular. He executed some kind of strange ritual and told me there was an entity stuck in my body causing all of my (fictional) problems. Very soon it became clear that all this was just a money scam, a complete rip-off.
This fact raised some interesting ethical questions for me: who was exploiting who? I exploited him for my work, he exploited me for my money, we are both charlatans, lying to each other, each with his own hidden agenda.
The strange thing is, the next day I got violently ill, all of a sudden. In 20 minutes time the pain was so strong, I had to be rushed to the hospital, where I was examined for two days, but the doctors found nothing. As a sceptic I can hardly believe this was related to the voodoo-ritual, but it's a bizarre ending for an otherwise unspectacular rendez-vous.
