A Secret Garden
My big sister had a favourite book. The jacket bore thumb marks, the pages were tattered. This favourite book was called “The Secret Garden”. I really wanted to read it myself and sometimes crept into her room, over to the bookshelf, to carefully pick it up and gaze at the picture on the cover. Then I tried to read from the pages – but had to give up, my English wasn’t good enough. I couldn’t follow the story.
Later I saw a film, an adaptation of the book. The film was pretentious; the action, scenes and protagonists didn’t come close to the story that the cover picture had told in my imagination. I was disappointed. An inescapable feeling. The legend of the Minotaur, the record by The Cure, parks in England and Marcel Duchamp’s “Étant donnés” – the gardens we find do not fulfil their enigmatic promise.
