Watou

Art festival Watou 2010. Between Language and Image / Collected Stories #2 is an experiment on the edge of language and image. The subtitle Collected Stories refers to the diversity of narratives of the different disciplines such as visual arts, poetry and literature. A selected group of curators brings a range of interdisciplinary art projects to unusual venues in the rural village of Watou.

The group exhibition “Past in Present” brings together the works of a selection of established artists and musicians, alongside the works of emerging artists associated with three leading European post-graduate residence programs: HISK (Higher Institute for Fine Arts, Ghent, Belgium), Rijksakademie (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), and Slade School of Art (London, UK). The leitmotiv of this exhibition is the relativity of reality, the interpretation of time, memory, history, and the inevitable discrepancy between the memory of the past and the concrete actuality of the present. “The Third Memory”, by French artist Pierre Huyghe, and “The Loneliness of the Project”, by philosopher Boris Groys, both served as key examples in the development of the exhibition's concept.

With works by: Céline Butaye, Masashi Echigo, Zoro Feigl, Boris Groys, Susan Kordalewski, Jitka Mikulicova, Miks Mitrevics & Kristine Kursisa, Noor Nuyten, Jan Op de Beeck, Nicolas Provost, Lee Ranaldo & Leah Singer, Max Razdow, Rebecca Stephany, Tithonus, Philippe Vandenberg, Lauren von Gogh, Sarah Westphal

Curator: Jan Van Woensel
